This temple has a long history from the Ayutthaya era to the present. During the reign of King Rama I, the ubosot was built and named "Wat Yannawa". Then, King Rama III built a temple building in the shape of a Chinese junk ship, giving the temple the nickname the "boat temple". The part of architecture inside of this temple is about the room that people pray, ubosot that enshrined the Buddha images and the pictures that draw in the style of "Loi Prathip Royal Lantern Festival" (Thai:พระราชพิธีลอยพระประทีป). The part of architecture outside is about the building that enshrined Buddha relic from Sri Lanka and has the Goddess of Mercy in front of the building. Its shape is distinctively of a Chinese junk vessel, a 19th century sailing ship. HistoryWat Yannawa (Thai: วัดยานนาวา) is an ancient old Buddhist temple (wat) dating back to the Ayutthaya period (1350-1767). located in the Sathon district of Bangkok on Charoen Krung Road, Bangkok, Thailand. It has a unique junk shaped chedi and viharn built by King Rama III. The idea behind the construction was that Chinese junk was quickly disappearing and the pagoda should show present descendants what it looked like. The temple was originally known as Wat Khok Khwai (วัดคอกควาย; "temple of the buffalo stable") during Ayutthaya era and Wat Khok Krabue (วัดคอกกระบือ) during Thonburi and early Bangkok era before the construction of the chedi. Originally called Wat Khok Khwai (means buffalo stable) and later renamed to Wat Khok Krabue (same meaning but more polite language) when it was designated to be the royal temple in the reign of King Rama I of Rattanakosin Kingdom (1782-1809). In the reign of King Rama III, (1824-1851), the giant Chinese junk with two large pagodas on its deck was built to commemorate the prosperous trade between Thai and China during that period, and that was why the temple was renamed to Wat Yannawa (boat temple). Apart from the unique Chinese junk with pagodas, the temple also consists of the statue of Kind Rama III, ancient bell tower, ubosot, and the office and library with exquisite architectures. You can visit Wat Yannawa by taking exit 4 and walk for just a few minutes until you see Soi Charoen Krung 52, the temple is located right next to that Soi try to be around the front courtyard at sunset to gaze of the colour display of the chedi and Junk as well as the courtyard decorations Videos
