Classic Thai Temples & Khaosan Rd
Immediately north of Rattanakosin (Grand Palace) an area prominent in Culture. This zone is home to a very lively travelers scene and a mass of budget accommodation.
Some love it, some hate it but it's worth a look especially the main walking street "Khaosan Rd" where you will find extensive markets, a huge range of goods from cheap clothes to Thai handicrafts, many inexpensive restaurants and all the different types of people that come will make it a interesting experience.
Somewhat surprisingly, the nearby backstreets retain a genuinely Thai feeling, much more so than Bangkok's other main tourist accommodation areas, it's an infusion, dynamic not too extreme yet always passive as is Thai.
Whilst the major transport systems don't pass through, they get you close otherwise take local canal or river ferry get immersed in the local culture.

Land: Taxi: car / tuktuk / motor bike is frequent
Water: River and canal ferry frequent

- Prison Museum Rommanimart Park near Giant swing (old khlong Prison) a bit gory - M tour book
- Wat Bowonniwet Many Chakri Kings and Princess ordained hereWat / temple
- "Indraviharn Wisut" Giant 32mtr Buddha statue, tallest of it's kind in the world

Khaosan Rd is a backpacker zone in Old city area of Bangkok, near the Grand Palace, this is a mixing bowl of cultures where East meets West with a hilarious creation of Markets, Restaurants, bars, and nightlife, it's trendy and bizarre, once the home for backpackers - it's now where thousands of people troll the 3 street zone (high, medium, low) looking for "happiness" there's plenty for everyone .. up to you, more in media hub page http://goo.gl/CdkR31
