![]() Zone: Thonburi > 5 kms West of Siam Duration: half day / evening The impressive silhouette of Wat Arun’s towering spires has probably become one of the most recognised temple landmarks of Southeast Asia. Constructed during the first half of the 19th century by King Rama II, in the ancient Khmer style, the stupa (or ‘Prang’ in Thai), showcasing ornate floral pattern decked out in glazed porcelain, is even more stunning up close. Apart from its beauty, Wat Arun symbolises the birth of the Rattanakosin Period and the founding of the new capital after Ayutthaya fell. Wat Arun is named after Arun, the Indian God of Dawn. Contrary to what it's name suggests, the temple appears most beautiful at sunset, rather than sunrise. The most attractive structure is the 79 metre high pagoda. It is also called the ‘Temple of Dawn’. Most beautiful view is from the east side of the river at sunset. Touristy but try a "Longtail Boat ride" from Central Pier which links with BTS (skytrain) station Saphan taksin and on arrival try the ever popular photo shot in Thai costume. Situated on the river bank, the main ferry stop is Pier (Tha) N7 Rachini and then a ferry across the river (3 Baht). However if you have booked a long tail boat you go directly to pier at Wat Arun.
