Ancient art of Muay Thai

October 2012 by Ultimate guide to Thailand

Muay Thai or sometimes known as "kickboxing" in the Western world is a form of martial arts that involves the use of the whole body especially the arms, hands and legs as weapons and for self defense. Originating as a fighting art developed in Ancient Siam for the soldiers who were defending the country against attacks by the Burmese and Cambodians, it has evolved into an intricate fighting discipline that though may sound brutal but is actually rather graceful and steeped with many traditions and rituals. Muay Thai is a popular sport in Thailand though now they don't use it to go around "killing" other soldiers but rather to learn it as a tradition, culture and off course fame. The Western world has also embraced this fighting art form and now there are many tournaments as well as World Championship Competitions along the same popularity line as a good World Boxing Match.

It takes years to develop the skills, strength, grace, agility and popularity of a Muay Thai Fighter. They start from a very young age as the arms, shins, legs and torso need to be fortified against hard blows which means the body is constantly trained to resist the pain of these blows. Muay Thai training starts at a very young age where small boys and even girls who are interested in this sport will start their training under the watchful eyes of a former champion as he keeps an eye out for budding talents.Watching a Muay Thai fight in Thailand can also be rather engaging, the arena or stadium will be packed with spectators rooting for their favorite fighter, the galore of colors, noise and off course the silent bets in the corners. However, visitors who are interested to watch a Muay Thai fight can make their way to the Muay Thai Stadium in Lumpini in Bangkok. There are regular demonstration fights as well as small championships. Those who are interested to learn about this sport are not excluded. There are many Muay Thai training centers that welcome foreigners and will train them the same way as the Thais.

There is just this very "cool" aspect of being a Muay Thai fighter, which of course one of it is a great body because of all the workout! So if you are thinking of an innovative way to lose weight and be fit while having a bit of the glamour, find your way to a Muay Thai gym! If the physical exertion is not your cup of tea and you would just rather watch a good fight, there are many competitions held in Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket as well as other provinces. Some of these competitions include the big names of international Muay Thai fighters who make their way back to Thailand to compete. As with a boxing match...the excitement level is the same, or maybe even better than a boxing match!
