Khon is one of the oldest traditional dance and performing arts in Thailand. It depicts stories taken from Thai legend, myth and the Ramakien (Ramayana).
Dancers are dressed in very elaborate costumes and wear very intricate hand made masks that represent the different characters of a story. Some of these characters depict Gods, deities, ogres, villains and heroes.
The headdress that accompany these masks are just as elaborate and decorative.
The Khon performers are trained in the elegant art of performing, mostly from a very young age. This traditional performance is fast becoming obsolete as the younger generation are more interested in other things rather than their cultural roots.
These performances are available at Siam Niramit in Bangkok and Pattaya as well as the Alankarn Theater in Pattaya. This is the true life-blood of classical Thai performances and should not be missed when you visit Thailand.
